Developing the Well

Developing the Well

A pump is connected to the well pipe, and pumping begins slowly at first. If the well pipe is loose in the hole, a bucket or two of clean, washed sand may be added around the well screen to fill the drilled hole with materials washed from the well. The sand is then tamped to eliminate any annular space around the well pipe.

Some development is necessary, typically achieved by filling the pipe with water to create backflow into the well. This process—pumping and repeating—continues until the sand runs clear.

For potable water supply, disinfection is essential. A 50 ppm chlorine solution is poured into the well and left for several hours. After disinfection, the well is pumped until the chlorine odor disappears.

Finally, after completing the well, the surrounding ground should be graded to slope away from the well, ensuring no water pools near the well area. This prevents contamination and maintains proper drainage.
